There is that moment of exhilaration. You have decided to start homeschooling and you jump in with both feet. You are still a little nervous but you are excited. However, You know this is going to be great. That same feeling comes around each year when you finish your plans and your new books arrive. You are all in. Nothing can stop you now!
Homeschooling is a wonderful opportunity. It can truly change your family and your future. In fact, it is a vehicle for the type of change that you can’t even imagine. However, it is also hard work, and you are teaching real children, in the real world, with real life all around you. Since you obviously have kids, you already know that with kids, every day is an adventure. There is no such thing as boring. Life is busy, full, and sometimes, overwhelming.
Homeschooling Plans Meets Real Life
After spending hours, days, and maybe even months getting everything ready. The homeschooling year begins. You have everything set. The colored pencils are sorted by shade and in ROY G BIV order. The paper in your binders is crisp, and you are full of hope. Then life begins to happen. Someone spills a cup of juice on the new binders. The pretty colored pencils are now worn down and in random order. You have a super project week planned and two of the kids come down with the stomach bug. That math curriculum that everyone raved about is falling flat with your less than enthused second grader. What have you gotten yourself into?
We need to be honest with ourselves. No amount of planning, sorting, and researching is going to stop life from happening. With kids, life is messy and unpredictable. Even the homeschool influencers on Youtube and Instagram that have picture perfect school rooms have life happen. They just don’t necessarily share that. No one is immune. so before you start to beat yourself up or host a pity party, know that failed plans is all part of the journey.
Why You Need to Find Your Why
In the midst of all this, there is a reason that you started homeschooling in the first place. Dig deep and remember what that is. Write it down and put it somewhere safe. (You know like in your sock drawer where little hands can’t find it.) But, don’t put it away yet. Take some time to contemplate the deeper reasons of why you are doing this. What do you hope to accomplish? How will this change your family’s future? What is your non-negotiable for your children’s education? In short, find your why!
Your why is how you bulletproof your homeschool. Because, let’s be honest, there is no such thing as perfect this side of Heaven. We do are best, and I can tell you that if you are reading this you are an amazing mom doing amazing work, however that will never keep things from going wrong. There will be days when you are overwhelmed. Winter will come in and sap your motivation. Kids will get sick. Curriculum plan will fall through, because there is no perfect textbook or program for everyone. Every family is different. Every child is unique. You will have to forge your own path! This is not just a school choice, it’s a lifestyle shift. Even the best lifestyle shifts come with difficulty.
A Focused Heart
When life comes in and homeschooling gets hard, take out your why. Read it and then read it, again. Cry if you need to. Take a deep breath…or ten. Then dust yourself off, look yourself in the mirror, and say, “I can do this.”
Your heart will change your homeschool more than any fancy program or new manipulative. Is there anything wrong with trying something new? Absolutely not! In fact, if you are struggling more than you are thriving, trying something new is probably just what you need. Just make sure that the something new aligns with your why. Don’t chase what is working for others. Grit your teeth, search your heart, and do what works for you. Doing you is the best you can do.
The children you have came to you for a reason. You are the mom who can give them just what they need. Sometimes you will need help to do that, but in your deepest soul you know what they need better than anyone.
So, what is your why???
